Rick Curson grew up in the little town of St. Maries, Idaho, near the St. Joe River. While in middle school, his father’s occupation as a logger would take the family to the Oregon Coast, where Rick would spend his high school and college years. But North Idaho was calling him home, and he and his wife Stacey decided to make the move back in 2007, settling in Dalton Gardens.
That same year, Rick would open his business, Ultimate Concrete Coatings. “I was inspired to get into this particular line of work when I first saw a color flake floor at a home show nearly 20 years ago,” he recalls. “Although they were not very popular at the time, I saw a future in this industry.” The first couple of years in the business were difficult at times, but Rick’s perseverance paid off—and Ultimate Concrete Coatings has been going strong for 14 years and counting.
Rick has successfully operated the company in Dalton Gardens since it first opened, but time brings change, along with a brighter future, and he is proud to share that they have recently built a new commercial building and showroom in Rathdrum on Highway 41.
While serving the North Idaho/Spokane community over the years, Rick and his team have installed more than 1 million square feet of concrete coatings! And Rick ensures that he provides only the absolute best products available for any application, using only industrial polyureas, polyaspartics, epoxies, urethanes and related products, and their hand-troweled, seamless floors are low maintenance and easy to clean. “With our extensive knowledge and time-tested application of materials and methods, it is common for us to be consulted by concrete contractors, architects, designers and builders for coatings-related advice.” Rick is currently in the process of patenting an exterior crack repair system.
Since opening the business more than a decade ago, Rick has watched several business offering similar services come and go over the years. He is proud of his company’s ability to weather the market, which he attributes greatly to their tenure in the area. “Having installed for so many years under so many different conditions has well prepared us,” he affirms.
In addition to their coatings, Ultimate Concrete Coatings also provides complete garage makeover services including cabinetry and overhead storage solutions.

In addition to his work transforming concrete floors into a work of art, Rick dedicates his time and talents to his community in various ways. For the past six years, he has coached high school soccer at Christian Center School in Hayden, and he volunteers as a Charter representative with American Heritage Girls in Rathdrum, a patriotic scouting program that serves as an alternative to Girl Scouts. He and his wife have been foster parents for 20-plus years, having the opportunity to love and care for many children during this time.
“At the end of the day, my name is my legacy,” Rick says. “My work is an extension of the desire to leave a legacy of honor that my kids can talk about.”
