‘Make it Matter’

The Inland Northwest’s award-winning architecture and design firm ready to partner with you to realize your dream By Jillian Chandler

HDG Architecture

Josh Hissong and Armando Hurtado are leading the way in architecture and design—not only across the Inland Northwest but the country.

The founders of HDG architecture + design—a full-service architecture and design firm specializing in commercial, residential, hospitality and mixed-use multifamily architecture—Josh, LEED Green-Associate, AIA and Armando, AIA, NCARB have created a relaxed culture to provide their clients a sense of ease and enjoyment when discussing their hopes, dreams and aspirations, and while embarking on the journey, for what may be one of the biggest financial decisions they will make in their life.

Josh was fortunate to grow up in Coeur d’Alene. Though he moved away as a young adult, he returned to grow in the place he knew so well. He was inspired to pursue the design field 20 years ago after purchasing a loft—when he quickly realized the cost of design did not align with his initial budget. So, he bought the software, taught himself, and soon discovered he had an uncanny eye for design. Fast forward seven years to 2010, and Josh founded HDG.

Armando attended the New School of Architecture in San Diego, pursuing the industry because of his innate ability to see the inefficiencies in the spaces that we live, work and play. After finding out he and his wife were expecting their first child, the couple began longing for a slower pace of life. After traveling the country for three months, they discovered Coeur d’Alene during ArtFest and knew “it was the obvious choice.”

He would start his own firm the same year Josh launched HDG. After Armando and Josh collaborated on a few projects, they soon realized that “two heads are better than one,” and HDG was solidified as a partnership in 2011.

“Growing up in North Idaho and San Diego respectively, we have a varied outlook on design, which is actually very beneficial for our clients,” affirms Josh. “With backgrounds in design and business, we look at clients’ projects through multiple lenses.” This truly sets HDG apart.

When it comes to what the pair finds most rewarding about the work they do, it is “the excitement of the client and the emotions that come with building them something shiny and new,” shares Josh. “We are lucky enough to be in the business of creating spaces that people live in, spaces where people work and play, so we can impact other people’s lives in a positive way, every day. That just feels dope.”

Since 2010, they have completed more than 780 projects, ranging from residential remodels to ground-up commercial and residential, and everything in between. If you’re looking for a premier architecture and design firm to bring your dream project to fruition, let HDG lead the way.

“The adage of ‘put your money where your mouth is’ has never scared us,” assures Josh. “We are a firm that will stand behind everything that we do, as we design with a purpose.”
