Base Camp Wine & Co., located at 3510 N. Government Way in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, offers a welcoming and relaxed atmosphere for all wine enthusiasts. The owners, Laura Olson and Joe Petersen bring a wealth of hospitality experience to the business, having previously owned and operated successful bars and restaurants in Seattle. In addition to its wine offerings, Base Camp Wine & Co. features a curated selection of home decor and gifts, making it a go-to destination for those seeking unique items to enhance their homes or find thoughtful presents. Its proximity to Spokane makes it a favorite for wine lovers and shoppers.
Joe and Laura's journey into the wine business started long before Base Camp Wine & Co. Both began working in restaurants at 15, cultivating their love for the industry. Joe's career flourished as co-owner and operator of Percy’s & Co. in Seattle’s Ballard neighborhood, while Laura balanced hospitality expertise, having owned and operated 8 restaurants and bars in Seattle, followed by a corporate career. After stepping away from restaurant ownership to raise their children, they discovered Base Camp Wine & Co. (previously named The Dinner Party). They knew it was the perfect fit for their lifestyle and passions. In October 2023, they purchased the business, rebranding it in the summer of 2024.
At Base Camp Wine & Co., Joe and Laura have established not just a wine shop but a community hub where people can gather for wine tasting, share experiences, and build connections. "There is nothing more that we love than to create a space where individuals can come together for a common passion (in this case, wine) and leave with new friends and memories along the way," they share.
The local wine shop offers various services, including regular wine dinners and tastings, featuring a diverse selection from around the globe, making it a hub for wine travel and tourism. These events allow customers to expand their palates in a relaxed, enjoyable atmosphere. Base Camp Wine & Co has quickly become a favorite for those seeking a friendly, laid-back environment to explore wines and discover unique gifts.
One of the most rewarding aspects for Joe and Laura is witnessing the connections made at their events. “At every event we host, there are newcomers, and without fail, they leave with phone numbers and connections of established customers. It’s an incredibly rewarding space when we get to be the root of some incredibly deep friendships.”
The success of Base Camp Wine & Co. thrives on the support of their family, friends, club members, and the broader community. Laura and Joe are deeply grateful for the people who help them balance the demands of owning a business with their commitment to their children. “We know it couldn’t be done without such a solid network and foundation,” they say. Joe and Laura believe everyone who steps through their doors should leave feeling like they’ve gained great new friends.
Community involvement is another critical aspect of their business. Joe and Laura have taken over organizing the North Idaho Hospice Wine Taste Fundraiser, an event they find incredibly meaningful. Additionally, they have donated to many local non-profits in the community from the
Kootenai Health Foundation, to smaller organizations tied closely to their club members.
Looking ahead, Joe and Laura are excited about expanding their offerings with Wine Camp experiences. They successfully hosted their first trip to France with a small group in August, and they plan to offer more international and domestic wine tourism experiences in 2025 and beyond.
Base Camp Wine & Co. has become a true hub for wine lovers in Coeur d’Alene, offering a space where people can explore wine, make connections, and enjoy the sense of community that Joe and Laura have worked hard to create.
